Eligibility for the ICO Fellowship
To be eligible for the ICO Fellowship, applicants must:
- Be under 40 years of age at the time of application.
- Have successfully completed their ophthalmology residency and possess a specialist exam certificate in ophthalmology.
- Be reasonably fluent in the language of the fellowship training center.
- Reside in a country listed by the World Bank as low, lower-middle, or upper-middle income.
- Provide a detailed curriculum vitae, including a list of publications and their impact factors.
- Obtain an endorsement from their current program director, confirming the feasibility of the chosen host university and the sustainability of the research work during the fellowship.
How To Apply for the ICO Fellowship
Interested candidates should follow these steps:
- Create an ICO Account: If you do not already have one, register on the ICO website.
- Select a Fellowship: Identify your home country during the application process to view the fellowships you are eligible for.
- Complete Eligibility Check: Provide necessary information and upload required documents, including:
Scanned copy of the photo page of your passport.
Scanned copy of your ophthalmology specialization examination certificate.

Copy of your ICO Examination Certificate(s), if applicable.
Department of Ophthalmology Chair’s recommendation.
Reference letter from your current or former supervisor or tutor in ophthalmology.
4. ICO Eligibility Review: After submission, the ICO will review your eligibility and notify you of the decision.
5. Apply to a Host Training Center: If eligible, select and apply to a host institution from the ICO Fellowship Host Directory.
6. Host Application Review: The selected host will review your application. If accepted, confirm the fellowship details and agree on a start date.
7. Submit Fellowship Application: Complete and submit the Fellowship Host Acceptance Form, duly signed by the host, to finalize your application.
