The Megatrends Afrika Fellowship 2025 offers a unique platform for African researchers to contribute to critical research themes at leading German institutions. This initiative is a collaboration between the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin, the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) in Bonn, and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW).
About the Fellowship
The fellowship provides three post-doctoral researchers from Africa the opportunity to engage in independent or collaborative research on the transformative impacts of megatrends in Africa. Fellows will address global challenges and their implications for the continent.
Research Themes for 2025
- Violent Actors and Transformation of Conflict: Exploring how megatrends like digitalization and technological innovation shape conflict dynamics in Africa.
- Megatrends and Political Transformation: Investigating how megatrends influence democratization and autocratization processes across African nations.
- Global Power Shifts and Multipolarity: Analyzing Africa’s evolving international relations amid a fragmented global power structure.
Fellowship Benefits
The program offers substantial support to its participants, including:
- A monthly grant of €2,800.
- Coverage for an economy-class return trip to Germany.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible, applicants must:
Hold a PhD in political science, economics, geography, international relations, or a related field.
Be a national of an African country.
