The Utrecht Excellence Scholarship is a prestigious program designed to support talented international students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA). This scholarship offers the opportunity to pursue a Master’s degree at Utrecht University, one of the Netherlands’ leading academic institutions. Available in a select number of master’s programs, UES aims to attract outstanding students committed to academic and professional excellence.
Host Institution and Fields of Study
The scholarship is hosted by Utrecht University in the Netherlands. It is available for eligible international master’s programs offered by the university. Not all programs participate, so prospective applicants are advised to check the “Tuition fees and financial support” section of their chosen master’s program on the Utrecht University website to confirm eligibility.
Scholarship Value and Duration
The Utrecht Excellence Scholarship may cover tuition fees alone or tuition fees plus the income required for a residence permit for study, as determined by the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service. The scholarship is awarded for the nominal duration of the master’s program and may be renewed for the second year in two-year programs, subject to satisfactory academic progress.

Applicants must belong to the top 10% of their graduating class and should not hold an EU/EEA passport. They must not be eligible for financial support under the Dutch study grant and loan system. Furthermore, applicants must have completed their secondary school and/or bachelor’s degree outside the Netherlands and must have applied for an eligible international master’s program with a start date of 1 September 2025.
How To Apply
Students interested in the UES must first submit their application for an eligible master’s program by the program’s specified deadline. After completing this step, non-EEA students will have the option to apply for the Utrecht Excellence Scholarship starting from 1 November 2024. All UES applications must be submitted by 1 February 2025, 23:59 CET. After this deadline, the application portal will close. Applicants are encouraged to ensure they meet all the requirements and adhere to the deadlines for both the master’s program and the scholarship application.
